What is Social Media Marketing (SMM)?

Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Web 2.0 is a common term used today. Although coined in 1999 by Darcy Dinucci, an electronic information design consultant, Web 2.0 is often associated with Tim O’Reilly, O’Reilly Media, for their Web 2.0 conference in 2002. But what exactly is Web 2.0? Instead of a website simply giving you information (Web 1.0), the web is now interacting with visitors asking us to comment, share or bookmark content we like, or even more complex interaction such as recommending a restaurant or movie. Web 2.0 is a place where we can connect, collaborate, contribute content, and communicate.

Daniel Nations, an About.com journalist, notes that “traditional media is a one way street.” You listen to the news or read the newspaper, but you have limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter…social media in contrast is a two way street (actually more like a 5 lane highway with a 70 mph speed limit!).
